Rita was born about a year 1380 w Roccaporena, near Cascia in Italy. She was an only child. As a young girl, Rita felt a vocation to religious life. At the age of 14 years, obeying her parents' insistence, she married a young man, a refined but gifted man with a rather restless nature. By mitigating the difficult nature of her husband, she lived with him for eighteen years.

After the death of her husband and two sons, Rita was admitted to the Augustinian monastery of St.. Mary Magdalene in Cascia. Here, in isolation, Rita lived the pious life of a nun. For the last fifteen years of her life, Rita wore the thorn of the Lord's Passion on her forehead. She died 22 May 1457 r.

Immediately after Rita's death, many miracles began to happen through her intercession, which contributed to the rapid spread of her cult. 10 years after her death, Rita's undamaged corpse was placed in a decorative sarcophagus. Rita was beatified in 1628, a w 1900 r. Pope Leo XIII included her among the saints. Her body rests in a sanctuary in Cascia.
