The term psalm itself comes from the Greek word psalmos. It means a song performed to the accompaniment of stringed instruments. The biblical psalms include religious songs of Israel, related to the liturgy of the temple, and with prayer in the synagogue.
Psalms occupy a very important place in the liturgy of the church. They are characterized by the depth of religious experiences, emotional wealth and great poetic value.
The psalms greatly influenced the changes in lyrical poetry. Poets from different eras referred to their form and style.

There are psalms not only in the Christian religion. Numerous fragments of the Koran have a form that is very similar to the psalms.
